In 1960, four Middle Eastern countries and Venezuela banded together to form OPEC (Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries). Up to 1973 the infamous cartel helped stabilize the price of Middle Eastern oil. On October, 17, 1973 OPEC embargoed the USA effectively quadrupling oil prices. Since the 1973 oil embargo US - Arab relations have worsened and gas prices have been erratic, fickle and unpredictable.
