I became interested in a Middle Eastern topic because of the Arab spring. The Arab spring is a revolutionary movement in which Middle Eastern countries topple dictators. The spring started in Tunisia and spread across the Middle East. Another reason why I chose a Middle Eastern topic is because of all the wars in the region. When I connected the dots I figured that the Middle East practically lives off of oil. Think about it, oil is what makes an otherwise desert wasteland of a country rich. After realizing the importance of Arab oil, I decided to do OPEC.
At the beginning of this project I had no knowledge on OPEC, so I started my research by going to their website www.opec.org After lingering on the OPEC website for some time, I decided to get some other sources. I surfed the web resulting in a vast amount of resources. Unfortunately most of the sites were considered secondary sources. I made sure to keep track of the URL of any website I went to, so that I could site it later. My next course of action was to go to J.V. Fletcher Library (my local library). In the library I looked for books on OPEC, oil, and the Middle East. Also, I used my library's database to access newspapers for research. Lastly I used my history teacher for cross reference.
At the beginning I was not certain which category I was going to pick. I wanted a category that reflects creativity but doesn't need any preparation But I had restrictions as well; I was camera shy so performance was gone, I also had terrible writing abilities so paper was out, and I had terrible artistic skills, so exhibit was out. Now I narrowed my choices down to website, and documentary. After thinking carefully between the two choices I came to the conclusion that since you can display more creativity on a website than a documentary, I chose a website to do my project on. I definitely liked the multimedia portion of the website. On the contrary I disliked the writing portion of this project.
OPEC relates well with the theme: Turning points in history: people ideas and events, very well. This is because OPEC had a gigantic influence on the price of american oil. OPEC sucsessfully turned a market into a cartel. More specifically 1973 OPEC oil embargo showed the world that America was no longer in control of its oil prices. After the 1973 oil embargo america never really recovered its ground, and since then oil prices have been on the rise. although highly volitile and in dissary now OPEC can still dictate what american life is lik
